Akita is the capital city of Akita Prefecture in the Tohoku region of Japan.
As of June 1, 2007, with the merger of the former Kawabe District (including the former towns of Kawabe and Yūwa), the city has an estimated population of 336,250 and density of 364.6 inhabitants per square kilometre (944.3 /sq mi). The total area is 905.67 square kilometres (349.68 sq mi).
While the modern city was officially founded on April 1, 1889, Akita has been one of the most important cities in the Tohoku region since the medieval period. The Ashina and Satake daimyo clans established their capital in present-day Akita.
Akita City has the most beautiful seasonal changes during the year. In spring, Senshu Park, with the ruins of the castle of the Satake family , is full of cherry blossoms and azaleas.
In summer, you can enjoy the magnificent view of gigantic columns of clouds standing up over the Japan Sea. In autumn, Mt. Taihei becomes a beautiful rainbow of colors.
And then, in winter, everything is covered with pure white snow, and the air is so clear everywhere.
Besides such wonderful nature, there are many other things that one can see, do and eat that are unique to Akita. For example, in the Hirano Art Museum, you can see the ‘Akita no Gyoji’ (The Events in Akita), the largest canvas painting in the world, painted by Tsuguji Fujita (1886-1968).
Senshu Art Museum has the works of Kenzo Okada in mysterious profundity as well as ‘Akita-Ranga’, unusual works among Japanese paintings.
Kanto Festival is the pride of the Akita people and is well known even outside Japan. Truly, there are many places to see that are very unique to Akita.
Akita prefecture also has many distinctive local foods. Not to be missed!
It is said that “One picture is worth a thousand words” and “Seeing is believing,” So please come over and discover the good things of Akita with your own eyes.
You may find charms of Akita that even we haven’t discoverd yet!
Things to Do in Akita:
* Senshu Park (千秋公園)
* Kawabata Street (川反通り)
Within walking distance from the station, this bustling quarter has tons of bars, izakayas, and restaurants
* Zoo(大森山動物園)
* Mt. Taihei Prefectural Natural Park (太平山県立自然公園)
* Katsurahama and Shimohama swimming beaches
* The Boon Waterpark
* Round One
It’s like an amusement park, but not! There’s many sports, arcade games, and activities here all under one roof. It’s pretty cheap- I think it was 1,600 yen for 3 hours of fun. It’s great to go to the baseball cage when you need to vent, or play some taiko in the arcade games. There’s a tennis court, indoor soccer, basketball court, ice-games, roller skating etc. oh the choices are endless (well, maybe not, but there’s about 50 things you can do including eating and an obscure kick-boxing game hidden in a corner near the ping-pong tables).
* Masakichi Hirano Mus of Fine Art (平野政吉美術館)
* Akita Prefectural Museum (秋田県立博物館)
The museum is in a large, nice building with wonderful layouts and displays of the prefecture’s history, nature, an Akita native ‘hall of fame,’ and special exhibit rooms. The museum is located in Koizumi Park, a beautiful marshland area just a short distance northeast of Oiwake Station in the Kanaashi District of northern Akita City. Admission is free.
* Neburi-Nagashi Hall (ねぶり流し館)
Otherwise known as the Akita City Folk Traditions Hall (秋田市民俗芸能伝承館), this hall introduces the different festivals and folk dances of the Akita City region. The first floor also holds a demonstration area where you can even try hoisting a Kanto pole yourself, and on the third floor is a try-it-yourself taiko room. The museum connects to an Edo-period merchant’s house that has been preserved as a cultural asset. Admission is 100 yen (or 250 for a combined ticket for the Akarenga Folklore Museum). The displays are primarily in Japanese, but the staff are quite friendly, and the museum is within walking distance of Akita Station.
